What is a Church?
According to the Bible, the church is the body of Christ. Jesus Christ is the head, and Christians make up the rest of that body. God has given believers church congregations so that they can praise and worship Him and fellowship with one another.
God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made Him head over all things for the benefit of the church. And the church is His body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with Himself. – Ephesians 1:22-23 (NLT)
It’s important to understand that there are local church congregations, which we will be referring to in this article, and there is the church body, which is defined above. When you become a believer, you usually become a member of both churches.
For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body. – 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NIV)
A local church is a place for you to grow spiritually, building your relationship with God at the same time. It’s also a place for fellowship and honesty if you need edification from others. Make and build spiritual friendships that will last a lifetime at church.
As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. – Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)
Why Go to Church?
You might wonder why you should even go to church. Maybe you are looking for answers to many church questions. What is the purpose of church? Why go to church? What is the benefit of attending a church service? Should you join a particular church congregation?
Many of the answers to questions about finding the right church are totally up to you! What is your preference? Where do you feel most comfortable praising and worshiping God? You might also want to consider the church where you can have the biggest impact.
After all, we were put on Earth partly to bring others to Jesus Christ. You can use your spiritual talents or what you are called to do spiritually (your spiritual purpose) to serve God at church! It’s worth a consideration; how can you best spend your time in serving our Lord?
Also, ask yourself a few questions. What are your spiritual goals? How do you best learn about the Bible? Do you enjoy personal Bible study, or would you prefer to go to a group Bible study? What does this particular church offer in terms of Bible studies?
There are hundreds of benefits of going to church that you can explore. The main purpose and benefit of going to church is to praise and worship God. After all, He is our Creator! He deserves all the glory in the world, even if many people do not see it that way. You can glorify Him!
Let them give glory to the Lord and proclaim His praise in the islands. – Isaiah 42:12 (NIV)
What Does It Mean to Go to Church?
If you want to “go to church,” it typically means that you will attend a local church congregation that meets, usually on a Sunday or Wednesday night. It could also mean that you watch an online church service from the convenience of your home.
To go to church regularly, you will probably want to attend church on at least a weekly basis. This will help you maintain relationships with friends and family and the most important person of all – our Lord Jesus Christ and His Father, the Almighty God.
There might be other definitions of what it means to go to church, but generally, Christian Americans attend at least once a week. Some churches offer at least three services per week (or more)! If you feel inspired, as we will discuss later, be sure to attend church more often!
As a side note, if possible, I would encourage you to attend church services in person. You are better able to fellowship with other Christians if you are there! Also, you’ll be more inspired if you hear the choir or church sing live! You are just more likely to get something out of it in person!
I don’t like the phrase “get something out of” when applying it to going to church, as it can imply a selfish motivation for going to church. Instead, we should focus on how we can give back at church – to other Christians, non-believers, and, most importantly, to God!
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:2 (NIV)
How to Go to Church Regularly
To experience the many benefits of going to church, you need to make an effort to go on a regular basis. Maybe you have an unusual schedule or other time constraints that make going to church difficult. Make every effort to rearrange these things!! God should be your top priority!
What if you’ve never attended church or don’t have a church home? You can find a church home online. Do a little research to discover everything about the church you are interested in, or email them! They will likely be more than happy to answer any questions about their church!
How can you start going to church, and what will it take to become a member? In the following sections, we will discuss further how to go to church so that you will know exactly what to do in order to become a member of the body of Christ, along with some tips for success!
We hope you find this encouraging and helpful!
And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near. – Hebrews 10:25 (NLT)

Attend a few services, and then join the church. Once you are a member of the church, you should get involved in the various ministries that the church participates in. This is the best way to stay motivated to go to church on a regular basis.

How to Join a Church
Some churches allow you to place membership in an official way. They might have you go to the front of the auditorium so that they might introduce you to the church congregation. This way, the members of the church can get to know you better.
Also, many churches keep a directory of their members, where you can get your photograph taken and stored so that other members can contact you should the need arise. If you are uncomfortable with any of it, of course, you do not have to do these things to be a member!
Most churches just want you to belong to their church so that they can fellowship with you on a regular basis and ensure your salvation, keeping you on track spiritually. While this could probably be worded better, you understand my meaning. We all need to be held accountable!
Many of the newer churches just consider the people who show up to be their members. There is no formality about it. So, if you enjoy going to a particular church, just keep going! You will find the rewards far outweigh any disadvantages you experience!!
Also, be sure to ask the member of the church you attend how to place membership or how to join the church. The leaders of that particular church congregation should have a solid answer for you in that regard. We do hope you join at least one church this year. Give it a shot!
If another believer is overcome by some sin, you, who are godly, should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way, obey the law of Christ. – Galatians 6:1-2 (NLT)
